Discernment

It starts with prayer

Taking time in quiet, even a few minutes each day, helps you tune in to God’s voice in your heart.

It’s not about pressure

Discernment is a process, not a one-time decision. It’s okay to take your time.

You don’t have to figure it out alone

Spiritual direction or talking with a Sister can be a huge support.

Peace is a big clue

Often, God speaks through what gives us deep peace and joy—not just what feels “easy.”

God meets you where you are

There’s no “perfect” place to begin. Just start from wherever you are today.

Learning. Searching. Discerning.

What is Discernment?

Discernment is simply the process of listening closely to God and paying attention to how He might be inviting you to live your life. It’s not about having all the answers—it’s about being open, curious, and willing to take that next small step toward what brings peace and a sense of purpose. Whether you’re wondering about religious life, considering a career path, or trying to understand your gifts, discernment is a journey—and you don’t have to walk it alone.

Make space for quiet

Try setting aside time each day for prayer, journaling, or simply being still. Ask God honestly: “What do You desire for my life?”

Talk with someone you trust

A friend, campus minister, or sister can help you process what you’re feeling. Sometimes saying it out loud brings clarity.

Connect with the IHM Sisters

We’re here to listen, walk with you, and share what it’s really like to live this life of joyful service. You don’t need to have it all figured out to reach out.

Visit and experience

Come to a retreat, vocation event, or simply spend time with the Sisters. Sometimes God speaks most clearly when you step into the space you're wondering about.

Be patient with yourself

God works in seasons. Every question, doubt, and moment of peace has a purpose in your journey. Whatever you're feeling in the moment, you're not alone. We're praying for you.

Suggestions for Discernment

If something in your heart is stirring—even just a little—it’s worth exploring. Discernment isn’t about being “sure” right away. It’s about being brave enough to stay curious and let God lead, one step at a time.
